How the CBAM certificate price is calculated
The CBAM certificate price is set equal to the volume-weighted average closing price of EU ETS allowances auctioned on the Common Auction Platform during the calendar week. From January 2026, prices are published quarterly by the European Commission based on the preceding quarter's auction results.
EU importers must surrender CBAM certificates equal to the embedded emissions of their imports. The number of certificates required is calculated using either the default embedded emissions values published in the implementing regulation, or verified actual emissions where monitoring data is available.
From 2027, the price cadence switches from quarterly to weekly publication, aligned with the ETS auction cycle.
