Question

In the section ‘Occupational pensions statistics’ (www.eiopa.europa.eu/tools-and-data/occupational-pensions-statistics_en) there is ‘EU_EE occupational pensions statistics - EN.xls’ file available for download which shows the statistical information which is very useful, however we would need to understand few variables and how do they relate to the items reported in the QRT report as it was not possible to identify that from the available documentation. Could you please indicate which items from the QRT report correspond to the below items: 1. TABLE 3: TECHNICAL PROVISION FOR PENSION LIABILITIES a. Net technical provisions (48400) b. Could you please elaborate on calculation of ‘Net assets covering the technical provisions’ using the variables from the QRT report. For some variables it is not clear how to relate them to the QRT items (e.g. Investments in affiliated enterprises and participating interests (PF) (48120), Units in undertakings for collective investment in transferable securities (48140), Participation in investment pools (48160), Other investments (48180) excluding derivatives).

Answer

The occupational pension statistics published on the EIOPA website refer to the end of 2018 data. This was collected by other means than the QRT's which were collected only as of Q3 2019.The next publication of the statistics (end of 2019 data) will be based on a mix of the QRT's and other means if the QRT's were not available. In that respect, we foresee the following formulas to link both datasets:•    Technical provisions: PF.02.01.24  ([C0010, C0020, C0040], R0280) + PF.02.01.24  ([C0010, C0020, C0040], R0290) + PF.02.01.24  ([C0010, C0020, C0040], R0300)•    ‘Net assets covering the technical provisions’: same as before: Market value of total assets – other liabilitiesPlease remark that these statistics will be replaced by new statistics fully based on the QRTs as of 2021.
