Bitvavo B.V. was incorporated in 2017 and launched in 2018. It was founded by programmers Tim Baardse and Jelle de Boer and business administrator Mark Nuvelstijn. The company is headquartered in Amsterdam.

The exchange offers a platform for buying, selling, and storing over 450 cryptocurrencies. It provides spot trading, staking, lending, and short selling, with both beginner and Pro trading interfaces. Payment methods include iDEAL, Bancontact, PayPal, and credit cards. Bitvavo charges trading fees of up to 0.25%. It offers zero-minimum deposits and free withdrawals. The company claimed approximately one million customers in 2023. It controlled about 40% of the Dutch cryptocurrency market at that time. By 2026, its user base had grown to over 2.3 million. In January 2023, Bitvavo faced financial strain after lending €280 million to Gemini, a subsidiary of Digital Currency Group, which later became subject to SEC legal action. In 2020, Bitvavo obtained DNB registration. It secured a MiCA licence in 2025, enabling operations across the European Economic Area. The company became a main sponsor of the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) in 2022 and a partner of the German Football Association (DFB) in 2026. Bitvavo has experienced several incidents: a 2022 technical misconfiguration exposed the data of eight users; a 2023 system outage occurred due to its infrastructure provider; and a data breach affected a limited number of customers in 2024. In July 2025, CEO Mark Nuvelstijn resigned following media reports linking him to money laundering and insider trading.

Bitvavo is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the Netherlands by market share and was described as the largest Dutch crypto platform in 2024. It is a market leader in Belgium as well, known for low fees and ease of use. However, its services are limited to residents of the SEPA zone. It does not offer futures trading or advanced derivatives. The exchange has faced reputational challenges due to incidents and the resignation of its CEO.
