Answer

Article 5 of Regulation (EU) No. 575/2013 (CRR) defines 'exposure' as "an asset or off-balance sheet item". Where, for example, the underlying of a derivative instrument leads to a contingent claim on the obligor of this underlying, this forms a separate exposure in addition to the exposure to the counterparty of the derivative instrument, irrespective of whether the contingent claim is separately recorded on the balance sheet or forms an off-balance sheet item. Article 112 of the CRR requires that each exposure is assigned to one of the exposure classes listed there, based on the relevant characteristics of the exposure. Where a single instrument causes two different credit risk exposures, as in the example described above, this requires assigning each of these exposures separately to an exposure class according to the criteria in CRR applicable for the respective exposure.
